Mathematics, Statistics and Economics

Mathematics, statistics and economics is a combination that brings together three quantitative disciplines that, in the modern world, are deeply intertwined. Mathematics provides the formal language of rigorous argument and the toolkit of techniques, from calculus and algebra to proof and numerical methods, that all quantitative work depends on. Statistics provides the methods for collecting, analysing and drawing inferences from data, dealing with uncertainty in a principled way.

Economics uses both to study how resources are allocated, how markets and institutions work, and how the decisions of individuals and governments shape the economy and society.

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in all three disciplines. Each year contains compulsory modules in mathematics and statistics alongside economics, with opportunities to explore different areas of mathematics and to choose elective modules from other subject areas as you progress. You will develop both the theoretical understanding and the quantitative skills to engage with complex economic and statistical problems, progressing to more advanced material in all three disciplines as the degree unfolds.
