About this course

Mathematics is the study of number, structure, space, and change, and it is the language in which the deepest patterns of the natural world are expressed. A mathematics degree develops not only the ability to calculate and to work with abstract structures, but also a precise, logical way of thinking that is genuinely transferable to almost any context where problems need to be solved and evidence needs to be evaluated. It is one of the most demanding and one of the most versatile degrees available.

At Aberystwyth University, the BSc Mathematics with integrated foundation year is designed for students who do not yet have the background to enter the main degree directly, whether because they studied different subjects, have been out of education for some time, or need to build confidence in mathematical thinking before tackling degree-level work. The foundation year brings you up to speed on the essential ideas and techniques of mathematics, providing a firm platform for the degree that follows. From there you will progress through the full undergraduate programme, studying pure and applied mathematics across topics including calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, differential equations, probability, and statistics.

As the degree develops you will have increasing opportunity to explore the areas that interest you most.

The programme runs over four years full-time in total, including the foundation year. Throughout your studies you will develop mathematical rigour, problem-solving skills, and the ability to construct and communicate precise arguments, all of which are highly valued by employers.

Graduates from mathematics programmes go on to careers in finance, data science, computing, engineering, education, actuarial work, logistics, and the public sector. Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, data science, or related fields is also a common route, and the degree provides a strong preparation for it.
