About this course

Mathematics and theoretical physics together form one of the most intellectually ambitious combinations available in higher education. Mathematics is the discipline of structure, pattern, and proof, developing tools of extraordinary power and generality that describe not just physical reality but abstract structures of every kind. Theoretical physics uses those mathematical tools to build models of the physical world, from the quantum behaviour of particles at the smallest scales to the cosmological dynamics of the universe as a whole.

The combination sits at the very frontier of human understanding, where mathematics and physics illuminate and challenge each other in ways that have produced the deepest insights science has yet achieved.

At the University of St Andrews, the MMath (Hons) in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics runs over five years in full-time mode, providing the depth and breadth that this demanding combination requires. You will develop a rigorous understanding of mathematical structures, including analysis, algebra, topology, and differential geometry, alongside the theoretical physics that puts those structures to work in describing quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, general relativity, statistical mechanics, and particle physics. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and to engage with mathematics and physics in a different academic culture.
