About this course

Mathematics and statistics is a degree that combines the formal rigour and abstract reasoning of pure and applied mathematics with the science of collecting, analysing and interpreting data. Statistics is one of the most practically powerful disciplines in the modern world, underpinning everything from clinical trials and public health surveys to financial risk modelling and the machine learning algorithms that drive contemporary technology. Mathematics provides the theoretical foundations that make statistical reasoning reliable and its conclusions defensible.

At the University of East Anglia this four-year programme includes a placement year, giving you a full period of professional experience in a context where mathematical and statistical skills are applied. You will develop a broad range of skills across both areas, with data analytics a core component alongside more theoretical mathematical study. Topics include financial statistics, mathematical modelling, probability theory, statistical inference and computational methods, building the foundation for a very wide range of careers.

The course runs full time.

Mathematics and statistics graduates are among the most employable in the quantitative disciplines. Finance, insurance and actuarial roles draw heavily on statistical skills. Data science, pharmaceutical research, government statistics, operational research, economics, bioinformatics and technology companies all offer relevant careers.

The placement year gives East Anglia graduates a practical advantage and direct professional exposure before graduation. Postgraduate study in statistics, data science, financial mathematics, biostatistics or operational research is a natural further step for those seeking specialist expertise or research careers.

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” goo…

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is …
