About this course

Mathematics and physics is a combination that reflects the deep and enduring relationship between the two disciplines. Physics asks fundamental questions about the nature of the universe, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the structure of space-time and the dynamics of galaxies. Mathematics provides the language and the tools through which those questions can be posed with precision and answered with rigour.

The great insights of modern physics, whether in quantum mechanics, general relativity or statistical mechanics, have always been expressed in mathematical form, and advancing physics requires advances in mathematics.

At Strathclyde, this part-time programme allows you to develop expertise in both mathematics and physics while managing other commitments. Part-time study is particularly well suited to students who are working in technically adjacent fields and want to build a stronger theoretical foundation, or to those who are returning to education and need flexibility. You will develop your mathematical skills across analysis, algebra, calculus and applied mathematics, alongside the core areas of physical theory including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum physics and thermodynamics.

The programme develops your capacity to translate physical ideas into mathematical form and to use mathematical tools to find solutions, which is the core intellectual skill of theoretical and applied physics. You will graduate with rigorous quantitative training that is valued across a wide range of demanding careers.

Graduates of mathematics and physics combinations move into research, engineering, technology, finance, data science, software development, teaching and a wide range of technical and analytical roles. The combination of precise mathematical thinking and physical intuition is valued wherever quantitative reasoning and modelling are central to the work.
