About this course

Mathematics and physics is one of the great classical combinations in science education, uniting the discipline that provides the language of physical theory with the discipline that is the primary context in which that language is used. Mathematics teaches you to understand complex patterns and structures and to develop the tools needed to describe and categorise the processes you encounter, whether those processes are physical, biological, or purely mathematical in character. Physics applies that mathematical language to the most fundamental questions about the nature of matter, energy, space, and time, and to the challenge of understanding the universe from the subatomic to the cosmological scale.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time MA (Hons) allows you to develop deep expertise in both disciplines simultaneously. You will study pure and applied mathematics alongside the full range of physical theory, from classical mechanics and electromagnetism through quantum mechanics and thermodynamics to more advanced topics in condensed matter and particle physics. The two disciplines inform each other continuously: mathematical rigour deepens your physical understanding, and physical intuition suggests new mathematical questions.

A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment. The typical entry tariff of 232 points reflects the exceptional academic ability required for this demanding combination at a leading research university.
