About this course

Mathematics and physics are the twin foundations of our understanding of the natural world. Mathematics provides the language and the tools, the structures, patterns and logical frameworks through which physical reality can be modelled and understood. Physics asks what the universe is made of and how it behaves, from subatomic particles to cosmic structures, and uses mathematics to answer those questions with precision.

Studying both together at the Open University, you will develop a powerful combination of abstract reasoning and scientific rigour that has applications across a remarkable range of fields.

This part-time distance learning programme allows you to study flexibly around other commitments, working through material online and at your own pace while benefiting from tutor support and a structured academic community. You will cover topics in pure and applied mathematics alongside physics, including mechanics, quantum theory, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, real analysis, algebra and mathematical methods. The degree rewards sustained effort and intellectual curiosity, and it develops the capacity for careful, systematic thinking that is valuable both within science and far beyond it.

The careers open to mathematics and physics graduates are notably broad. Many move into scientific research, engineering, data science, actuarial work, software development, finance and economics, where the combination of quantitative skill and physical intuition is particularly sought after. Others work in education, science communication, policy or technology consultancy.

The Open University model makes this degree accessible to people who are already working in relevant fields and want to formalise or deepen their knowledge, and it provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in mathematics, physics, astronomy or related disciplines.
