Mathematics and Philosophy

Mathematics and philosophy is one of the most intellectually elegant of all degree combinations, bringing together the two disciplines that have, perhaps more than any others, shaped how human beings reason and what they know. At the University of Durham, this three-year, full-time programme develops both disciplines with depth and seriousness. You will study mathematics across a wide range of areas, including pure mathematics, statistics, and applied topics, developing the ability to construct and evaluate mathematical proofs and to work with abstract structures at an advanced level. In philosophy, you will engage with the major areas of the discipline, including logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and the philosophy of mathematics and science, developing the analytical precision and argumentative rigour that philosophy demands.

This programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, providing exceptional breadth of experience alongside the academic content.
