About this course

Mathematics and computer science are two disciplines with a deep and productive relationship. Mathematics provides the theoretical foundations on which computing is built: logic, algorithms, number theory, graph theory, probability, and linear algebra are all mathematical subjects that are essential to computer science. Computer science, in turn, uses mathematical reasoning to analyse the properties and performance of algorithms, to build secure and reliable software, and to develop the theoretical understanding of what can and cannot be computed.

Studying them together gives you a more rigorous and versatile intellectual toolkit than either alone.

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time BSc programme is a highly regarded combination that develops strong mathematical and computational skills alongside the ability to apply them to the problems that modern computing presents. You will study pure and applied mathematics, including analysis, algebra, and statistics, alongside programming, algorithms, software engineering, and theoretical computer science, building a dual competence that is valued across a wide range of industries and research environments. Swansea's department has a strong international research profile, and the programme benefits from this scholarly environment.

Graduates of mathematics and computer science programmes are exceptionally well placed in the job market. The combination of mathematical rigour and computational skill is sought in data science, financial technology, software engineering, machine learning, cryptography, operations research, and academic research. Employers in finance, technology, defence, and healthcare particularly value the dual background because it equips graduates to engage with problems where mathematical modelling and computational implementation are both required.

Postgraduate study in computer science, mathematics, AI, or statistics is a common route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research.

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport…

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student …
