About this course

Mathematical physics is a discipline that operates at the boundary between two of the most rigorous intellectual traditions in human knowledge, using the structures and methods of advanced mathematics to formulate and solve problems in theoretical physics. Where applied mathematics might use mathematical tools pragmatically to model physical systems, mathematical physics engages with the deeper question of why mathematics describes the physical world so well, developing the formal frameworks within which quantum mechanics, field theory, relativity, and other fundamental theories are precisely stated and analysed.

At the University of Liverpool, this five-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country before returning to complete your degree. The five-year structure provides additional time to develop mathematical maturity and physical intuition alongside each other, and the year abroad allows you to experience a different research and teaching culture in mathematical or theoretical physics. You will study pure and applied mathematics in depth, including analysis, algebra, differential equations, and topology, alongside the major areas of theoretical physics including quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, electromagnetism, and field theory.

A typical entry tariff of 136 points is expected.

Mathematical physics graduates have a particularly strong quantitative and analytical preparation that is valued in research, finance, data science, computing, and engineering, as well as in academic physics and mathematics. Many continue to doctoral research in theoretical physics, mathematical physics, or applied mathematics, where the combination of deep mathematical knowledge and physical insight is precisely what research at the frontier requires. Others move into quantitative roles in the financial sector, scientific computing, or technology.
