About this course

Materials science is the discipline that studies the structure, properties, and processing of the materials from which technology is built. It asks why metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites behave as they do, and how those properties can be engineered to meet specific demands. From the semiconductor materials that make computers possible to the alloys used in jet engines, the polymers in medical implants, and the graphene and other advanced materials that may define the next generation of technology, materials scientists are at the foundation of innovation across almost every technical field.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Manchester includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving your studies a genuinely international and professional dimension. Manchester is one of the world's great centres for materials research, with Nobel Prize-winning work on graphene and world-leading groups in advanced alloys, biomaterials, and functional materials. You will study the atomic and microstructural basis of material properties, thermodynamics and kinetics of materials processing, mechanical behaviour, electronic and optical properties, characterisation techniques, and the design of materials for specific applications.

The sandwich year and work placement embed you in a professional environment, connecting your academic learning to the realities of materials research and development in industry.

Materials science graduates work in aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy, medical devices, construction, and the advanced manufacturing sector. Roles include materials engineer, research scientist, process engineer, and quality manager. Manchester's reputation in the field, combined with the professional experience built into the programme, makes graduates highly competitive in both industry and academia.

Professional registration as a chartered engineer or scientist is available through bodies such as the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Postgraduate study in materials science, nanotechnology, or a related engineering discipline is an option for those who want to specialise further.
