Masters in Law

A Masters in Law, or MLaw, is an integrated undergraduate and postgraduate legal degree that allows exceptional students to develop a level of legal expertise beyond what a conventional undergraduate LLB can provide. The MLaw builds on a strong qualifying law foundation and extends into advanced research, specialist legal topics and postgraduate-level critical engagement with the law. At York St John University, the four-year full-time programme develops your legal knowledge through interactive lectures and workshops in an environment where staff get to know students individually. You will study the foundations of the English legal system, the core substantive areas of law and more advanced specialist content. The MLaw at York St John includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most comprehensively structured programmes available, with opportunities at each stage to develop academic preparation, professional experience and international perspectives.

The MLaw is a qualifying law degree and provides stronger preparation for the academic stage of legal training than the standard LLB. Graduates pursue careers in legal practice as solicitors or barristers, subject to completing the required professional training, as well as in the civil service, policy, legal research and academia. Postgraduate study in law or related fields is also accessible for those with specific research interests.
