About this course

Marketing with psychology is a combination that takes seriously something all effective marketers know: that understanding human behaviour is the foundation of commercial communication. Psychology illuminates how people perceive, decide, remember and are influenced, and those insights are directly applicable to how brands engage their audiences, design their messages and build lasting relationships with customers. This degree integrates both perspectives from the start, rather than treating them as separate bodies of knowledge.

At Sheffield Hallam University you will study both disciplines in a coherent and complementary way, exploring consumer psychology and behaviour alongside the practice of marketing strategy, brand development, content design and customer research. You will learn to apply psychological frameworks to marketing challenges, understanding not just what works in practice but why. The programme includes a foundation year, which builds your analytical and business foundations before the main degree begins, as well as a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities.

The full programme runs full time, giving you substantial professional experience alongside your academic development.

Graduates are well placed for roles that require insight into human motivation and the ability to translate that insight into effective marketing activity. Consumer research, brand management, digital marketing, customer experience strategy, advertising and communications all draw on the combination of psychological understanding and marketing practice this degree develops. The blend of skills is particularly valued in agencies and brands that take evidence-based approaches to persuasion and behaviour change.

Further study at postgraduate level in marketing, consumer psychology or business is a natural option for those who wish to specialise or move into more senior strategic roles.
