About this course

Marketing is the discipline concerned with understanding customers and markets, and with creating the strategies and communications that connect organisations to the people they want to reach. It draws on psychology, sociology, data analysis, and creative practice, combining an understanding of why people make choices with the ability to design campaigns, products, and experiences that meet real needs and create genuine value. In an economy characterised by intense competition and rapidly changing consumer behaviour, the ability to identify trends, build brands, and communicate effectively is central to the success of organisations in every sector.

At the University of Essex this three-year programme gives you a grounding in marketing theory and practice that is both academically rigorous and commercially relevant. You will study consumer behaviour, market research, branding, digital marketing, communications strategy, and the analytics that allow marketers to measure and improve what they do. The course takes seriously the global and rapidly changing character of contemporary markets, preparing you to operate as a marketer in environments that require both strategic thinking and the ability to respond quickly to new information.

Essex's strong social science tradition means that the course approaches marketing with critical depth as well as practical skill.

Marketing graduates work in agencies, in-house marketing teams, brand management, digital marketing, market research, product management, and communications across virtually every sector. The skills you develop are relevant wherever an organisation needs to understand its audience and reach them effectively, which includes the public sector, the charity sector, and the cultural industries as well as commercial businesses. Many graduates go on to specialist roles in digital marketing, brand strategy, or data analytics, while others progress into general management.

Postgraduate study in marketing, business administration, or digital communications is a common next step for those seeking senior or specialist roles.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On t…
