About this course

Marketing and management together address the two fundamental challenges facing every organisation: how to understand and reach the markets it serves, and how to organise and lead the people and resources needed to do so effectively. Marketing examines consumer behaviour, brand strategy, market research, digital communications and the creative and analytical work of positioning organisations and their products or services in the minds of their target audiences. Management addresses leadership, strategy, organisational design, operations and the practical challenges of making organisations work.

Together they prepare you for a wide range of commercial roles where both market insight and organisational competence are required.

At the University of Durham you will study both disciplines in depth, developing the analytical and creative skills that allow you to solve business challenges with originality and rigour while remaining focused on commercial results. The programme runs over four years full time and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. These structural features consistently strengthen graduates' employability, providing concrete evidence of the ability to apply academic knowledge in real commercial environments and to perform effectively in different cultural and organisational contexts.

You will develop skills in market analysis, strategic planning, consumer research, financial literacy, leadership and the professional communication needed to present ideas and findings persuasively across different audiences.

Graduates from marketing and management programmes move into careers in brand management, marketing strategy, digital marketing, commercial management, management consulting, product management and a wide range of general management roles. Durham's alumni network and employer relationships strengthen graduate outcomes further. Postgraduate study in business administration, marketing or management is also a well-established route for those seeking senior or specialist roles.
