Marine Science

Marine science is the study of the world's oceans, seas, and coastal environments, examining the physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes that govern them. The oceans cover more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface, regulate its climate, support extraordinary biodiversity, and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people. Understanding how marine systems work, how they are changing under pressure from climate change, pollution, and overexploitation, and how they can be managed and protected, has never been more urgent or more scientifically demanding.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme allows you to engage with marine science at a pace that suits your existing commitments, building knowledge in oceanography, marine biology, ecology, and environmental science progressively over your period of study. The University of the Highlands and Islands is geographically well placed to bring the study of marine environments to life, located close to some of the most significant marine habitats and research sites in Europe. You will develop scientific skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation alongside the conceptual understanding of marine systems that rigorous environmental work requires.

Graduates in marine science go on to careers in marine conservation, environmental monitoring and management, fisheries science, oceanographic research, government agencies, and the offshore and renewable energy sectors. Roles include marine biologist, conservation officer, fisheries scientist, environmental consultant, and research technician.
