Marine Biology with Foundation Year
Marine biology is the study of the living organisms that inhabit the oceans, seas, estuaries, and coastal waters of the world, and of the ecological, chemical, and physical environments in which they live. It encompasses everything from microscopic phytoplankton, which generate roughly half of the Earth's oxygen, through the invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals that populate marine ecosystems, to the ecological communities and food webs that organise life in the ocean. At a time when marine environments face significant threats from climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss, marine biologists have a crucial role in understanding and advocating for the health of ocean systems.
At Salford this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional preparation before the main degree, alongside a sandwich element and a work placement. The foundation year builds knowledge in biology and environmental studies alongside problem-solving and practical and communication skills, ensuring you are well prepared for the rigour of the main programme. The BSc Marine Biology degree that follows is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, providing professional recognition.
You will study the biology of marine organisms and ecosystems, fieldwork methods, and the environmental challenges facing marine environments, developing the scientific competence and practical skills needed for research and applied marine biology roles.
Graduates in marine biology find careers in environmental consultancy, fisheries management, marine conservation, government environmental agencies, marine protected area management, aquaculture, zoo and aquarium work, ecological survey, and research institutions. The Royal Society of Biology accreditation is a recognised credential across biological science careers. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in marine biology, conservation biology, oceanography, or environmental science, or pursue professional development aligned to specific career pathways in marine management or research.
