About this course

Marine biology is the interdisciplinary study of life in the ocean, encompassing everything from the molecular biology of marine organisms to the ecology of entire ocean systems. The oceans cover the vast majority of the planet's surface and contain almost all of its habitable space, making them the largest and most biodiverse environment on Earth. At the same time, marine systems are under unprecedented pressure from overfishing, pollution, climate change, and ocean acidification, and the scientists who understand them are central to our capacity to respond to these challenges.

The three-year full-time Marine Biology programme at Queen's University of Belfast recognises that the position of marine biology graduates has never been more critical to the functioning of our society, economy, and environment. You will apply cutting-edge technologies to help tackle complex marine issues on a scale from molecules to ecosystems, developing skills in field and laboratory techniques, quantitative data analysis, and the modelling of marine systems. The programme covers marine ecology, oceanography, fish biology, invertebrate zoology, molecular marine biology, and conservation science, giving you a comprehensive understanding of marine life and the processes that sustain it.

Northern Ireland's coastal and marine environments provide both a teaching resource and a context for the applied dimensions of the curriculum.

With a typical entry tariff of 136 points, the programme attracts students who combine scientific rigour with a genuine passion for the ocean. Graduates pursue careers in marine conservation, fisheries science, environmental consultancy, marine renewable energy, government environmental agencies, and research institutions.
