About this course

Marine biology and coastal ecology together provide one of the most compelling lenses through which to understand life on Earth. Oceans cover more than two-thirds of the planet's surface and support an extraordinary diversity of life, from microscopic phytoplankton to the largest animals that have ever existed. Coastal ecosystems, including estuaries, saltmarshes, kelp forests, and coral reefs, are among the most productive and ecologically vital habitats on the planet, and they face some of the most pressing threats from climate change, pollution, and habitat loss.

Studying them requires a blend of field skills, laboratory science, and ecological theory.

At Plymouth, a university with deep roots in marine science and a coastal campus, this three-year full-time degree immerses you in the biology of the sea and the ecology of coastal environments. You will study marine organisms and their adaptations, the dynamics of marine and coastal ecosystems, oceanography, environmental monitoring, and conservation science. The programme includes a foundation year option for those who need additional preparation, and a sandwich year and year abroad for those wishing to deepen their professional and international experience.

Work placement opportunities are also available, connecting your academic learning to professional contexts in marine science, conservation, or environmental management.

Graduates from marine biology and coastal ecology programmes go on to careers in marine conservation, environmental consultancy, fisheries management, government agencies, research institutions, and wildlife organisations.
