Liberal Arts with Philosophy

Liberal arts is a mode of education that takes seriously the idea that the broadest intellectual formation is also the most valuable. Rather than specialising in a single discipline from the outset, liberal arts programmes ask you to engage across the humanities, social sciences, and sometimes the sciences, developing the flexibility, critical thinking, and breadth of understanding that complex problems in a changing world actually require. Adding philosophy as the integrating core gives the degree a distinctive character, grounding the interdisciplinary exploration in the most fundamental questions about knowledge, ethics, and meaning.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme offers a flexible and interdisciplinary degree structure that allows you to study more than one subject in a meaningful and connected way, building the skills needed to navigate a complex and changing world. You will gain a broad understanding of major global issues, including those related to the environment and social justice, while developing an awareness of the importance of civic engagement. Philosophy is the thread that ties the programme together, providing the conceptual tools to engage rigorously with the ethical, political, and epistemological questions that run through your interdisciplinary study.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic and cultural environment and to encounter different intellectual traditions. A typical entry tariff of 200 points applies.

You will develop skills in critical thinking, research, argumentation, and the ability to move thoughtfully between different disciplinary perspectives. These are capabilities with broad application across the graduate landscape.

Graduates from liberal arts programmes work in public policy, the civil service, journalism, education, international organisations, the voluntary sector, and a wide range of other roles where breadth of understanding and clarity of thought are valued. Many also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, politics, law, or related fields.
