Learning Disability Nursing
Learning disability nursing is a specialist branch of the nursing profession dedicated to supporting people with learning disabilities to live healthy, fulfilling, and self-determined lives. People with learning disabilities may experience a range of conditions that affect their intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, and they face significant health inequalities compared to the general population. Learning disability nurses work across health and social care settings, advocating for the rights and needs of the people they support, helping them to navigate complex health systems, and working with families, carers, and other professionals to provide holistic, person-centred care.
The University of Northampton's three-year full-time BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing carries a typical entry tariff of 136 points. As the course itself describes, it equips you with nursing skills to work within health and social care environments with people with learning disabilities. Practice placements throughout the programme take you into a variety of health, education, and social care settings with people of all ages and a range of learning disabilities, developing your clinical skills, professional judgement, and understanding of the diverse needs of the people you will support.
The programme combines academic study of nursing theory, health science, and the social and legal context of learning disability with the practice-based learning that professional nursing requires.
Graduation and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council allows you to work as a learning disability nurse across the NHS, social care, education, and the independent and voluntary sectors. Learning disability nurses work in community teams, supported living, assessment and treatment units, schools, NHS trusts, and advocacy organisations. Many develop specialist skills or move into management, education, or advanced practice roles.
