Learning Disability Nursing
Learning disability nursing is a field of professional practice dedicated to supporting people with learning disabilities to live with dignity, autonomy, and the best possible quality of life. Learning disabilities affect how people understand information, learn new skills, and manage independently, and nurses in this specialism work across health and social care settings to provide holistic, person-centred care that addresses medical, emotional, social, and practical needs. The role requires specialist knowledge, deep compassion, strong communication skills, and the ability to advocate for some of the most vulnerable people in society.
At the University of Chester, this three-year programme leads to registration as a nurse in the learning disability field with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will develop a thorough understanding of the holistic care needs of people with learning disabilities across the lifespan, from childhood through to older adulthood. The curriculum covers the theoretical foundations of learning disability nursing, clinical skills, pharmacology and medicines management, mental health and behavioural support, legal and ethical frameworks, and the social model of disability.
Clinical placements are integrated throughout, giving you experience in a range of health, educational, and community settings.
The programme includes a foundation year, which provides additional preparation before the main nursing curriculum begins, and a year abroad, broadening your perspective on how learning disability services and policy operate in different international contexts.
On qualifying and registering, you will be eligible to work in NHS learning disability teams, community settings, supported living environments, specialist educational settings, and residential services. Career pathways include community learning disability nursing, specialist clinical roles, behavioural support, health facilitation, education, and leadership within health and social care. Postgraduate study in advanced practice, leadership, or a related field supports progression into more senior roles.
