Law with Integrated Foundation Year
Law is among the most intellectually demanding and professionally respected of all degree subjects, requiring the careful development of analytical precision, the ability to construct and evaluate arguments and a thorough understanding of the rules and principles that govern how society organises its affairs and resolves disputes. A qualifying law degree provides the academic stage of training needed to pursue the legal professions in England and Wales, as well as developing skills that are valued across business, finance, government and the public sector. At the University of Sunderland this four-year LLB programme includes an integrated foundation year and a sandwich year.
The foundation year provides a supported entry into legal study for those who are returning to education, who did not quite meet standard entry requirements or who simply benefit from a structured year of academic preparation before the main degree begins. You will then move through the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, land law and equity, developing the legal reasoning, research and writing skills that the profession demands. A sandwich year and work placements provide opportunities for professional experience in legal or related settings before you graduate, helping you to develop practical understanding of how law operates in practice and to build the professional contacts that support career entry.
Graduates who want to practise law typically go on to complete the Solicitors Qualifying Examination for the solicitor route or the Bar Course for the Bar, supported by periods of qualifying work experience. Other graduates move into compliance, financial regulation, legal operations, public sector management, insurance and commercial roles, where legal knowledge and analytical capability are valued even outside formal legal practice. Some go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas of law or in related fields such as human rights, international law or business.
