Law with Integrated Foundation Year
Law is a discipline that trains precision of thought as much as it transmits a body of knowledge. The ability to identify the legally relevant elements in a complex situation, to read statutory and case law with care, to construct an argument within a given framework and to communicate your reasoning clearly are skills that serve you well in legal practice and in many other demanding professions. A law degree is also an engagement with the rules that structure social life: contract, criminal law, constitutional arrangements, human rights and the mechanisms through which disputes are resolved peacefully.
At Royal Holloway, the integrated foundation year for the LLB Law is a thorough, skills-building stage that gives you everything you need to begin your legal studies with confidence. The full programme runs across four years, and it includes both a sandwich year and a year abroad, alongside integrated work placement opportunities. These structural features are valuable in a profession where early exposure to legal environments is increasingly expected: the placement and sandwich year give you the chance to experience how law operates professionally before you complete your degree, and the year abroad broadens your understanding of how different legal systems approach common problems.

You will study the core legal subjects required for qualification in England and Wales alongside electives that allow you to pursue areas of particular interest. Royal Holloway's law school sits within a research-active university with strengths in areas including criminal justice, human rights and international law.
Graduates continue to professional training through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or the Bar Professional Training Course, or move into careers in the civil service, compliance, finance, insurance, human resources, and the many other sectors where legal knowledge is applied in non-advocacy contexts. The placement and year-abroad experience typically strengthens graduates' professional profiles considerably.
