About this course

Law with German language is a degree that combines rigorous legal training with proficiency in one of the most important languages in European legal and commercial life. Germany has the largest economy in Europe and is a major centre of international commerce, arbitration and regulatory activity, and German is not only the language of German law but an important language of legal scholarship and cross-border practice across central Europe. Combining a Scottish law degree, which includes both Scots law and wider legal systems study, with German language competence creates a distinctive and commercially valuable profile.

At Glasgow, one of Scotland's leading research universities with a well-respected law school, this four-year programme develops your German language skills alongside a thorough education in Scots and comparative law. You will cover the core legal subjects including public law, private law, contract, obligations, property and evidence, while the German language strand develops your communicative and analytical skills in German to a high level, including engagement with German legal and commercial contexts. Glasgow's location in Scotland's largest city gives it strong connections to the Scottish legal profession and to international commercial legal practice.

The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points.

Graduates pursue careers as solicitors and advocates in the Scottish legal system and in commercial law firms with international practices, as well as in European institutions, international organisations, in-house legal roles in multinational companies and academic legal research. German language competence adds significant value in commercial legal practice, in EU regulatory work and in legal contexts involving German-speaking parties or jurisdictions. Many graduates continue to the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice before entering legal practice, and some pursue postgraduate study in comparative law, European law or German legal studies.
