About this course

Law with English law is a degree designed specifically for students who want the flexibility to pursue a legal career in Scotland, where Scots law operates as a distinct legal system, or in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which operate under a different common law tradition. Scots private law has Roman origins and differs substantially from English law in areas including property, obligations and family law, while public and criminal law have converged to a greater degree. Qualifying as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland typically requires knowledge of Scots law, while qualification south of the border requires knowledge of English law.

This programme gives you both.

At the University of Aberdeen this four-year, full-time programme at Aberdeen Law School develops your knowledge across both legal systems, covering the essential subjects required for academic qualification under either system. You will study contract, property, delict and other private law subjects from both Scots and English perspectives, alongside public law, criminal law, evidence and the procedural frameworks of both jurisdictions. The programme includes a year abroad, which may involve study at another law school in the UK or internationally.

Aberdeen Law School's trademark approach emphasises breadth, depth and the cultivation of genuine legal thinking rather than mere vocational preparation, producing graduates who understand the law rather than merely knowing some rules.

Graduates are well positioned to proceed to professional training in either Scotland or England and Wales, entering the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in Scotland or the Legal Practice Course or Solicitors Qualifying Examination south of the border. Careers in legal practice, the judiciary, public service, commerce, international organisations and academia are all open, and the unusual dual-jurisdiction qualification is a genuine differentiator for those who wish to work across the border or in organisations with UK-wide legal needs.

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is mana…
