Law with American Law is a degree that provides a thorough grounding in English law alongside a focused introduction to the American legal system, giving you a comparative perspective on two of the world's most influential legal traditions. English law, in its common law tradition, has been transplanted to dozens of jurisdictions around the world and continues to be one of the most widely used legal systems in international commerce and arbitration. American law, while sharing the common law heritage, has developed in distinctive directions shaped by the US Constitution, a federal structure of unusual complexity, and a Supreme Court with the power of judicial review.
Understanding both systems deepens your understanding of each and prepares you for a professional or academic career with a genuinely transatlantic dimension.
At the University of East Anglia, this four-year full-time programme covers the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, land law, equity and trusts, and EU law, while also incorporating systematic study of American constitutional and private law. You will develop the legal reasoning, analytical, and written communication skills that are central to legal education, and you will learn to compare legal systems and to identify how different institutional structures and legal cultures produce different outcomes.
