Law
Law is one of the most intellectually demanding and socially consequential areas of study available at university. It develops a distinctive mode of reasoning: careful attention to texts and rules, the ability to construct arguments from precedent and principle, skill in identifying ambiguity and resolving it through interpretation, and the capacity to communicate complex ideas with precision and clarity. These capacities are not merely useful for legal practice; they are highly transferable skills that graduates take into careers across business, policy, public service, and the professions.
At the University of Strathclyde, you will study law over four years, a structure that reflects the Scottish degree tradition and that provides the depth needed to engage seriously with Scots law and comparative legal systems. You will study the core areas of Scots law, including contract, delict, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, commercial law, and property, developing both the substantive knowledge and the analytical rigour that a law degree demands. Strathclyde also welcomes mature students who hold a relevant first degree or who satisfy the university's general entry requirements, reflecting an inclusive approach to legal education.
A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and to develop comparative legal understanding and an international perspective that is increasingly valuable in legal practice.
You will develop strong research, analytical, and communication skills, and you will engage with the ethical and social dimensions of law as well as its technical content.
Graduates are well placed to pursue qualification as solicitors in Scotland or England and Wales, or at the Scottish Bar. Many also go on to careers in law, commerce, public service, the civil service, and research. Postgraduate study in law, including the Diploma in Legal Practice and other professional qualifications, is the standard route to legal practice in Scotland.
