Law is the study of the rules and principles by which societies regulate behaviour, resolve disputes, and protect rights, and a law degree is an introduction to one of the most consequential systems of organised human knowledge. The discipline spans private law, covering contracts, property, and tort, through public law, including constitutional and administrative law, to criminal law, international law, and specialised fields such as commercial law, family law, and human rights law. A law degree develops not just legal knowledge but the capacity for rigorous analytical thinking, precise written argument, and the ability to apply principles to complex factual situations, all of which are valuable far beyond the legal profession itself.

At the University of Stirling, law is studied within the Scottish legal system, which is a separate jurisdiction from English law with its own historical roots in Roman and continental European legal traditions. This means that graduates of Scottish law degrees are particularly well placed to practise in Scotland, and the programme also covers Scots and UK-wide public law topics that have wider relevance. The four-year, full-time programme follows the Scottish honours structure, and it includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study law in a different legal system and to develop the comparative perspective that is increasingly valuable in a world where law operates across borders.

The curriculum covers the core substantive and procedural areas of Scots and UK law alongside jurisprudence, legal research methods, and optional specialisms that allow you to develop your particular interests.

Graduates can qualify as solicitors or advocates in Scotland through the additional professional stages required after the degree. Many also use their legal training in business, public policy, compliance, journalism, and social work. Postgraduate study in law, including conversion to English law, is available for those who wish to practise south of the border.
