Law is the framework through which societies organise their affairs, resolve disputes and protect individuals from the arbitrary exercise of power. Studying it at degree level means more than learning rules: it means understanding how legal systems are constructed and why, how judges reason, how legislation is made and interpreted, and how the law interacts with politics, economics and social change. A law degree develops analytical rigour, precise communication and the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments, skills that are valuable far beyond the legal profession.

At Swansea University, the LLB Law degree has been designed as an intellectually rigorous and innovative programme. You will study the core foundations of English and Welsh law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, and equity and trusts, before engaging with more specialist areas of your own choosing. Legal reasoning and research are central throughout, and you will learn to read cases and statutes carefully, to identify the principles at work, and to apply them to new situations.

The degree also engages with law in its broader contexts, examining how legal rules interact with human rights, commercial practice and the international order.

Swansea's position in Wales gives the degree a distinctive context. You will gain awareness of the Welsh legal jurisdiction, which has developed its own legislative body and legal character, and of the ways in which devolution has shaped the relationship between Welsh and English law. The university's coastal location and active student community make it a lively and engaging place to study.

The three-year full-time LLB is a qualifying law degree, which means it satisfies the academic stage of training for both solicitors and barristers. Graduates enter legal practice, the civil service, business, financial services, journalism, policy and the third sector. Postgraduate study in law, including the Legal Practice Course or Bar Practice Course, is the usual next step for those entering the profession.
