Law (Scots and English/NI) Dual Qualifying

A dual qualifying law degree provides something that very few legal qualifications can offer: the academic foundation to practise law in more than one jurisdiction. Scots law and English or Northern Irish law are distinct legal traditions, one rooted in Roman and civilian law, the other in the common law tradition, and understanding both gives you an unusually flexible legal education and exceptional professional flexibility. Graduates of a dual qualifying degree can pursue qualification as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland, as a solicitor or barrister in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, or in many other common law jurisdictions worldwide.

At Dundee this four-year full-time LLB teaches you the foundations of legal knowledge in both the common law tradition and Scots law, developing the key analytical, research, and communication skills that any legal education must provide while extending your theoretical and practical understanding across two distinct legal systems. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage with legal education in another country and to extend your comparative legal perspective. The dual qualifying status of the degree means that you graduate with maximum professional flexibility, and careers sessions are embedded in the course to support your transition into legal practice or other careers.

Graduates go on to pursue qualification as solicitors or advocates in Scotland, solicitors or barristers in England and Wales or Northern Ireland, or in other common law countries. The flexibility to practice across jurisdictions is particularly valuable for those who want to work in international law, cross-border commercial practice, or in organisations that operate across the UK and Commonwealth. Many graduates also pursue careers in business, public service, the civil service, or international organisations.
