Law at the University of Surrey offers a programme enriched by a Philosophy, Politics and Law pathway that situates legal study within the broader intellectual traditions from which law draws its foundations and justifications. Law is not a self-contained system: it depends on philosophical assumptions about justice, rights, and the relationship between individuals and the state, and it is inseparable from the political processes through which rules are made and challenged. This pathway brings those connections to the foreground.

You will cover the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, land law, and equity, developing the skills in legal research, statutory interpretation, and case analysis that are fundamental to legal competence. The philosophy and politics strand enriches this core with questions about the nature and justification of law, the relationship between law and morality, the design of legal institutions, and the political dynamics that shape legal change. You will engage with legal philosophy alongside political theory, developing a sophisticated understanding of why law takes the forms it does and how it might be different.

The programme also integrates AI into the curriculum, building digital skills, confidence, and creativity that employers value in the contemporary workplace. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points, and the degree is studied full time over three years.

Graduates go on to careers in law, politics, public policy, the civil service, human rights organisations, journalism, academia, and consultancy. The combination of legal competence and philosophical and political depth is particularly valued in contexts where law meets public life. Further study options include the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, the Bar Practice Course, and postgraduate degrees in law, political philosophy, and public policy.
