Law in Practice with a Foundation Year

Law is among the most rigorous and intellectually demanding disciplines available in higher education, requiring you to master complex bodies of doctrine, reason precisely about the application of rules to facts, and engage with the social, political, and philosophical contexts in which law operates. At Swansea University, the LLB Law in Practice is designed to be both intellectually rigorous and innovatively structured, providing serious grounding in legal doctrine while also giving you valuable exposure to professional practice. This five-year version of the programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students whose prior qualifications do not yet meet the entry requirements for direct entry onto the LLB.

The foundation year builds the academic skills, legal literacy, and contextual understanding needed to engage fully with law at degree level. The main four-year programme then covers the core subjects required by the professional bodies, including contract law, tort, criminal law, public law, European and international dimensions, land law, equity and trusts, and EU law. Law in Practice is distinctive in its emphasis on connecting legal doctrine to real professional settings, and workplace exposure is built into the structure of the degree, giving you insight into how legal knowledge is actually applied by practitioners.

The programme reflects a view of legal education that takes seriously the question of what law is for as well as what it says. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates of LLB programmes are eligible to proceed to the further vocational training needed to qualify as solicitors or barristers, and Swansea's connections with legal employers in Wales and beyond support those career pathways. Many graduates also move into paralegal and legal advisory roles, the civil service, policy, compliance, and roles in business and finance where legal knowledge adds significant value. The degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in law, and for any career where the ability to reason carefully about rules and their application is an advantage.
