Latin/ Theology & Religious Studies

Latin and theology and religious studies is a combination that connects the ancient linguistic heritage of Christian and classical culture with the broad intellectual study of religion in all its dimensions. Latin is the language of the Roman world and of the medieval church, and reading it unlocks not only classical literature and philosophy but centuries of theological writing, legal scholarship, and humanist thought that shaped European civilisation. Theology and religious studies encompasses the study of religion, religions, the Bible, and theology, not as worlds apart but as they relate to politics, history, literature, philosophy, art, and culture, as well as to personal belief and practice.

At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme develops your Latin language skills alongside a broad engagement with the major religious traditions of the world and the theological and historical questions they raise. You will study scripture, doctrine, religious ethics, and the history of Christianity alongside other world religions, while Latin gives you direct access to primary texts that are central to the Western intellectual tradition. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different European or international context and encounter different scholarly traditions in both classics and religious studies.

Graduates of Latin and theology go on to careers in teaching, parish and chaplaincy ministry, the voluntary and charity sector, academia, archives and heritage, journalism, publishing, and public service. The combination of linguistic precision, historical depth, and ethical seriousness the degree develops is valued across a wide range of professional contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, classics, or related disciplines.
