Latin and Mediaeval History

Latin is one of the most intellectually rewarding languages a student can learn, not because it is merely old, but because mastering it gives you direct access to an extraordinarily rich body of literature and opens a window onto a culture whose influence on European law, governance, religion, philosophy, and language has been incalculable. Medieval history, studied alongside it, extends that encounter through the centuries that followed Rome's fall, tracing how classical learning was preserved, transformed, and reinterpreted across the Middle Ages. This four-year full-time MA (Hons) at the University of St Andrews combines both disciplines, and includes a year abroad that takes your intellectual engagement with different cultures and academic environments beyond the UK.

You will develop your Latin to a high level of proficiency, reading major authors in the original and learning to navigate both classical and mediaeval texts. Your engagement with the language will deepen your literary and cultural analysis skills, sharpening your ability to interpret complex arguments and ideas, a competence that is relevant well beyond classical studies itself. The mediaeval history strand will take you through the major political, religious, and intellectual developments of the post-Roman world, asking how Latin served as both a medium and a shaping force in that history.

A typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the selectivity of the programme. The combination of rigorous linguistic training and historical breadth makes graduates well suited to careers in academia, archival and heritage work, publishing, law, the civil service, journalism, and education. The analytical and communicative skills Latin and history develop are transferable across the professions, and many graduates continue to postgraduate research in classical studies, mediaeval history, palaeography, or related fields.
