Language, Culture and Communication

Language, culture, and communication is a discipline that sits at the intersection of linguistics, cultural studies, and the anthropology of human interaction. Language is not simply a neutral vehicle for conveying meaning; it is deeply embedded in the cultures, social relationships, and power structures of the communities that use it. How we speak, write, and interact reflects and reproduces social identities, values, and hierarchies, and understanding that relationship requires both the close analysis of linguistic form and the broader perspective of cultural and anthropological inquiry.

At Southampton you will study this three-year full-time programme, exploring the relationship between language and culture in a globalised world. You will combine linguistics, including the analysis of language structure, use, and variation, with cultural and anthropological approaches to communication, examining both digital and non-digital forms of human interaction. The programme includes a year abroad, which extends your learning into an international context, giving you direct experience of how language and culture operate differently in different environments.

You will develop the analytical tools to examine discourse, identity, intercultural communication, and the role of language in social and political life.

Graduates of language, culture, and communication find their skills valued in a wide range of careers. Intercultural communication roles in international business, diplomacy, and NGOs; language education and teaching English as a foreign language; translation and localisation; content strategy and digital communications; research in linguistics, anthropology, and cultural studies; and public policy work involving language and communication are all natural destinations. The combination of linguistic analysis and cultural understanding is particularly valuable in organisations operating across national and cultural boundaries.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, cultural studies, anthropology, or applied linguistics.
