Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is the discipline concerned with planning, designing and managing outdoor spaces for both people and the natural environment. It encompasses everything from urban parks and streetscapes to ecological restoration, infrastructure corridors and large-scale land management, requiring practitioners to think simultaneously about aesthetics, ecology, climate adaptation and social need. As cities face pressure from population growth and environmental change, the ability to design landscapes that are resilient, biodiverse and genuinely usable has never been more important.

The University of Sheffield's programme runs across five years full time as an integrated masters degree. That extended duration reflects the depth of training the profession requires: you will build broad expertise in landscape theories and concepts while also developing the ability to specialise, with options to focus on ecology or planning depending on your interests. One of the five years is spent working in a professional landscape practice, giving you sustained real-world experience and direct contact with the industry before you complete your studies.

A year abroad is also embedded in the programme, widening your exposure to different design traditions, climatic contexts and planning systems.

You will learn to work across scales, from the intimate detail of a public garden to the strategic planning of a region, using a combination of hand drawing, digital modelling and site analysis. The programme develops both creative design thinking and rigorous technical and environmental knowledge, preparing you for a profession that sits at the boundary between the built and natural worlds. Graduates typically move into practice as landscape architects, working for landscape consultancies, local authorities, national parks, environmental agencies or large infrastructure and development projects.

Some pursue further study or research in landscape urbanism, ecology or planning policy. Chartered status with the Landscape Institute is a common professional goal, and the five-year integrated masters structure is designed with that pathway in mind.
