Journalism is one of the most essential and most challenged professions in contemporary society. At its best it holds power accountable, informs citizens, and makes democratic life possible. The skills of a journalist, including the ability to find and verify information, construct clear and compelling narratives, understand media law and ethics, and adapt to the platforms and formats through which news is consumed, are in genuine demand across a media landscape that is undergoing rapid and continuing change.

At York St John University this part-time programme, which is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Teaching Council, develops your ability to write for any news platform and equips you to navigate the evolving future of journalism. You will learn to adapt to new ways that media is consumed, developing the digital skills that modern journalism requires alongside the foundational competencies of the craft: accurate reporting, fair sourcing, clear writing, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern what journalists can and should do. Media law, ethics, and public affairs are integral parts of the curriculum, not add-ons.

A sandwich year and a year abroad provide professional experience and international exposure, and work placements are integrated throughout the programme. Journalism is a field where professional experience matters enormously, and these elements give you direct contact with the news industry alongside your academic study.

Graduates of journalism programmes move into roles in print, broadcast, online, and podcast journalism, as well as in public relations, content creation, media research, communications, and a range of other roles where the skills of clear, accurate, and compelling communication are valued. The BJTC accreditation is recognised by broadcast employers and is a significant credential when applying for roles in broadcast journalism.
