Jazz with Foundation Year
Jazz is a musical tradition that emerged from African American communities in the early twentieth century and has since become one of the most influential and widely practised art forms in the world. Rooted in blues, ragtime, and spirituals, it developed through the bebop revolution, the cool jazz movement, free improvisation, and jazz fusion, continuously reinventing itself while maintaining a core commitment to spontaneity, individual expression, and ensemble dialogue. Studying jazz at conservatoire level means engaging with this history and tradition while developing the technical facility and improvisational fluency needed to contribute to it as a practitioner.
At Leeds Conservatoire, this four-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year, takes you through jazz's roots and evolution through historical study, repertoire analysis, and creative application. You will analyse landmark works in the canon, rethink jazz traditions from multiple perspectives, and apply that understanding directly in your own compositions and performances. The ability to research, reflect, and translate your findings into musical practice is central to the curriculum, whether that takes the form of essays, performances, or creative projects.
The foundation year provides a supported entry into conservatoire-level study for students who need additional preparation. With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, the programme is designed for students with genuine musical commitment and an affinity for improvised music.
Graduates from jazz programmes pursue careers as performers, bandleaders, session musicians, composers, arrangers, and music educators. The jazz tradition's emphasis on ensemble playing and improvisation develops highly adaptable musicians who work across jazz, funk, soul, pop, and other genres as well as in more specialist jazz contexts. Teaching, music production, and music administration are further career paths.
