Studying Italian alongside Latin is to trace the remarkable continuity of one of the world's great linguistic traditions, from the language of the Roman Empire and its classical literature to the living tongue of one of Europe's most culturally significant nations. Latin is the foundation from which Italian emerged, and understanding both gives you a historical depth of perspective that neither language alone can provide. Italian opens the culture, literature, cinema, and art of a country whose influence on European and world history has been immense.

Latin gives you direct access to some of the most important texts in the Western intellectual tradition, from Cicero and Virgil to medieval scholarship, and the analytical rigour that comes from working with a highly inflected classical language has lasting intellectual benefits.

At the University of Glasgow, you will study both languages and the literatures and cultures associated with them over five years full-time. Italian study takes you through language acquisition to a high level of proficiency, engaging with literature, cinema, and cultural history from Renaissance Florence to contemporary Italy. Latin study develops your ability to read classical and medieval texts in the original, and places those texts in the intellectual and historical contexts that give them meaning.

The programme develops close reading skills, comparative literary analysis, and the capacity to work across different historical periods and cultural traditions.
