Italian is one of the world's great languages, the medium of Dante, Petrarch and Machiavelli, of opera and Renaissance art, and today of a major European Union country that has shaped the continent's political and artistic development profoundly. Studying Italian at university level means more than developing fluency: it means engaging deeply with the literature, culture, history and society of Italy, developing the linguistic precision and critical sensitivity to read complex texts in the original language and to participate fully in Italian intellectual and cultural life.

At the University of Glasgow you will study Italian over five years on a full-time programme that includes both a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities. Glasgow's Italian department teaches across the full range of the language's literary and cultural history, from medieval texts to contemporary film and media, and the extended programme gives you time to develop genuine depth in both language and cultural knowledge. You may study Italian from beginners' level, so no prior knowledge is assumed.

You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through a combination of language classes, seminars on Italian literature and culture, and time spent in Italy, where immersion in the language and society deepens your understanding in ways that classroom study alone cannot match. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 200 UCAS points.
