About this course

International tourism and hospitality management is concerned with the planning, organisation, and leadership of enterprises that make travel, accommodation, food, and leisure experiences possible for people around the world. It is a genuinely global industry, shaped by shifting consumer preferences, cultural difference, sustainability pressures, and the economic significance of tourism to destinations from rural villages to major cities. Managing within it requires both commercial competence and cross-cultural sensitivity.

At York St John University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route to the degree for students who need additional preparation for university-level study. The programme also includes a year abroad, which reflects the international character of the industry and gives you the opportunity to study and work in a different cultural and professional context before you graduate. The degree covers the theory and practice of hospitality management, tourism destination marketing, events management, sustainable tourism, financial management, and the operational realities of working in international hospitality environments.

You will develop the leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that the sector demands alongside a genuine understanding of global markets and diverse cultural expectations.

The year abroad is a particular strength of the programme, giving you the kind of international experience and cultural adaptability that employers in global tourism and hospitality prize highly.

Graduates go on to roles in hotel management, tourism development, events management, airline and cruise industries, destination marketing organisations, and hospitality consultancy, working in the United Kingdom or internationally. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in hospitality, tourism, or business management.
