International Relations

International relations is the study of how states and other actors behave and interact in the global system: why conflicts arise, how cooperation is achieved, what role international law and international institutions play, how economic interdependence shapes political behaviour, and what forces are reshaping the international order. It is a discipline that draws on political science, history, economics, sociology and philosophy to build a rigorous and multidimensional understanding of global politics, addressing some of the most consequential questions facing humanity.

At the University of Leicester you will explore the full range of important and interesting issues in international relations, including the dynamics of order and disorder in international society, human rights and their place in the global order, old and new security challenges from nuclear deterrence to cyber threats, and the political and economic dimensions of globalisation. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial international and professional experience alongside your academic studies. These structural features develop the cross-cultural awareness and practical skills that employers in international-facing organisations specifically value.

You will develop skills in international relations theory, comparative political analysis, research methods, critical reading and extended academic writing, alongside the personal resilience and cultural adaptability that come from sustained experience abroad.

Graduates from international relations programmes pursue careers in the civil service and diplomatic services, international development, the United Nations and other international organisations, NGOs, journalism, think tanks, research, political campaigning and private sector roles with international dimensions.
