International Relations

International relations is the study of how states, international organisations, and other actors interact in the global arena. It examines the causes of conflict and cooperation, the dynamics of security and power, the politics of the global economy, and the international norms and institutions through which states attempt to manage their relationships. In a world of intensifying geopolitical competition, climate negotiation, migration, and transnational governance challenges, understanding how the international system works has never been more important.

At the University of Essex, you will examine how states, organisations, and individuals interact on the global stage, exploring themes including conflict, security, globalisation, political economy, and regional politics. You will engage with the major theoretical traditions in international relations, including realism, liberalism, constructivism, and critical theory, developing the analytical frameworks to interpret international events and policy choices with nuance and depth.
