International Relations and Spanish

International relations and Spanish is a degree that prepares you to engage with global politics and the Spanish-speaking world with both analytical rigour and linguistic competence. International relations provides the theoretical and empirical tools to understand how states, international organisations, and non-state actors interact, why conflicts arise and how they are resolved, and what drives foreign policy decisions. Spanish gives you access to a vast and diverse linguistic community spanning Europe and Latin America, alongside the cultural and political knowledge to make that access meaningful.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this four-year full-time programme begins by introducing you to the core critical and emancipatory theories of international relations and their underlying methods, developing the intellectual tools to explain and understand power in the world, from the level of individuals to global systems. The Spanish strand develops your language proficiency alongside knowledge of the cultures, histories, and contemporary politics of Spain and Latin America. The four-year structure allows you to develop both sides of the degree to a high standard, and a year of intensive language development is typically embedded in the programme.
