International Relations and Management
International relations and management is a combination that prepares you to understand the world as it is and to operate effectively within it. International relations addresses the forces that shape relations between states and other actors on the world stage, including war and peace, foreign policy, trade regimes, international law, human rights, terrorism and the dynamics of global political economy. Management adds the practical and strategic dimensions of how organisations, whether businesses, NGOs or international institutions, are led, coordinated and developed in this complex environment.
At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is delivered within a university with a strong tradition in international studies. You will explore the causes of conflict and cooperation, the theories that explain international behaviour, the institutions through which global governance is attempted, and the management and leadership principles that allow organisations to function and adapt. The combination is particularly relevant to careers in international organisations, multinational firms, diplomatic services and development agencies, where both analytical understanding of global affairs and practical management competence are required.
You will develop skills in international analysis, policy evaluation, strategic thinking, communication and the leadership of teams and projects. Research and analytical writing are central to the programme, and you will engage with both quantitative and qualitative evidence about international affairs and organisational practice.
Graduates go on to careers in the diplomatic service, international organisations, NGOs, international business, consultancy, policy research, development agencies, government and public affairs. Some pursue postgraduate study in international relations, management, public policy or international law, building on the analytical and professional foundations the degree provides.
