About this course

International business and environmental sustainability is a degree shaped by one of the defining tensions of the current century: that global commerce as currently practised is placing enormous pressure on natural systems, and that organisations must find ways to pursue their objectives while managing their environmental impact more responsibly. The combination brings together the commercial and strategic frameworks of international business with a rigorous engagement with environmental science, sustainability thinking and the policy and management responses to ecological change.

The University of Dundee offers this four-year full-time programme with a year abroad, developing both business and sustainability expertise alongside genuine international perspective. The business content covers strategy, marketing, finance, international trade and organisational management, with particular attention to how firms operating across borders navigate different regulatory and market environments. The sustainability strand introduces you to the science and economics of environmental change, the frameworks of sustainable development, corporate environmental management, the growing regulatory pressure on business to account for its environmental impacts and the emerging opportunities in clean technology and green finance.

The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study these questions in a different national context, which deepens your understanding of how different societies and regulatory systems approach the challenge of sustainable development.

The degree develops analytical thinking, commercial awareness, environmental literacy and the ability to work at the intersection of business strategy and sustainability management. This combination of skills is in growing demand as organisations across all sectors take environmental responsibilities more seriously.

Graduates pursue careers in sustainability management, corporate social responsibility, environmental consultancy, green finance, international development, the energy transition sector and management roles in organisations with significant sustainability commitments. Postgraduate study in sustainability, international business, environmental management or related fields is a natural option for those wishing to develop further.
