Interior Architecture and Design
Interior architecture and design sits at a rich boundary between architecture, spatial design, and the decorative arts. Where architecture addresses the structure and envelope of buildings, interior architecture is concerned with the spaces within them: how they feel, how they function, how light and material and circulation shape the experience of the people who inhabit them. Good interior design is not merely decorative; it solves problems of ergonomics, accessibility, wellbeing, and sustainability, and it requires both creative vision and technical rigour.
At the University of Bedfordshire, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides an extended introduction to design thinking, drawing, spatial awareness, and the tools and methods of the discipline before you progress into the degree proper. This makes the programme well suited to students who are coming to design from a less directly arts-based background, or who want additional time to build their creative confidence and technical skills. As the degree develops you will explore the history and theory of interior design and architecture, work across a range of project briefs, and develop competencies in technical drawing, 3D modelling, material specification, and design communication.
The academic team maintains professional connections with the British Institute of Interior Design and the Royal Institute of Architects, as well as with BREEAM, reflecting a commitment to both professional standards and sustainable design practice.
Graduates from interior architecture and design programmes go on to work in interior design studios, architectural practices, retail and hospitality design, set and exhibition design, furniture and product design, and project management. The foundation year qualification means you enter the profession with five years of progressive design education behind you. Some graduates also go on to postgraduate study in architecture, spatial design, or related disciplines.
