About this course

Information technology is the discipline concerned with how computer systems, networks, databases and software applications are used to manage, process and communicate the information that organisations depend on. As organisations across every sector become more dependent on digital infrastructure to operate efficiently and effectively, the range of careers open to IT graduates has expanded significantly, spanning technical roles in systems administration, networking and software development through to management, consultancy and IT strategy.

At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a comprehensive combination of academic preparation and professional experience. The foundation year builds the technical and analytical foundations you need before moving into the degree proper. Through the main programme, you will develop expertise in networking, databases, cybersecurity, software development, project management and systems analysis, alongside an understanding of how IT functions within different types of organisation.

The sandwich year and work placement give you extended practical experience in real IT environments, while the year abroad broadens your professional perspective and international awareness.

Graduates find employment across every sector, in roles including network engineer, systems administrator, software developer, database administrator, IT project manager, cybersecurity analyst and IT consultant. Derby's professional orientation and the combination of placement experience and international exposure mean graduates are well prepared for the graduate job market. Further study at master's level in information technology, cybersecurity, data management or computer science is available for those who want to specialise further.

Exceeded expectations
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is …

Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the lecturers include people actively shipping research to industry. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make i…
