About this course

Information engineering sits at the frontier of electrical engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics, concerned with the design of systems that process, transmit, and extract meaning from information. From the algorithms that compress and stream video across the internet to the signal processing behind medical imaging, the machine learning systems interpreting sensor data in autonomous vehicles, and the communications infrastructure of mobile networks, information engineering addresses the fundamental problem of how to acquire, represent, and act on information reliably and efficiently in the physical world. It is an intellectually demanding discipline that combines deep mathematical theory with real engineering application.

Oxford's four-year information engineering programme is one of the most rigorous in the world, taught within an engineering science department that combines breadth of coverage with exceptional research depth. You will develop strong mathematical foundations in linear algebra, probability, and optimisation, alongside core engineering knowledge in circuits and electronics, signals and systems, control theory, and communications. As the programme advances, you will engage with more specialist areas including machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and information theory, always with emphasis on understanding the principles that underlie the tools rather than simply applying them.
